Expression
  • Most words and phrases spoken are understood by strangers
  • Pronunciation errors are common
  • Has at least 200 words (they can be mispronounced); about ¼ are nouns
  • The following grammatical constructions begin to be used appropriately: a, the, -ing, -s (plural), contractions (from memory, such as it’s, don’t)
Understanding:
  • Understands several hundred single words
  • Can answer where and what questions
  • Pays attention to a story for at least 5 minutes
  • Follows a two-step instruction with related commands
Social Interaction:
  • Plays beside other children; copies adult-like sequences for common tasks (like caring for a baby)
  • Takes turns in simple games, helps clean up
  • Reliance on routine to help regulate expectations and emotions
  • Becomes frustrated or impatient when having difficulty expressing feelings
